How did HoneyKomb come to bee?

Several years ago, entrepreneur Marthinus Hendrik Doman saw that South Africa was going through an energy crisis and that electricity was becoming an increasingly precious resource. Without electricity, how could one store food? Refrigerators don’t work when there is no electricity, and food would go off quicker than people could eat it. Marthinus realised that a solution was needed.

He knew that in an enclosed space, such as a sealed box, a vacuum could remove any harmful bacteria and microorganisms, stopping their growth with immediate effect. With this knowledge in mind, he consulted experts in various fields such as food technology, engineering and agriculture. After much research and development, HoneyKomb’s QueenBee vacuum cooler box was born. Marthinus chose the name HoneyKomb to emphasise his commitment to preservation.

You may be asking yourself, “How does this even work?” No worries, we’ll explain.

Using a manufacturing process called rotational moulding, or roto-moulding, the QueenBee cooler box was created. The process of roto-moulding is advantageous for the customer, as it is BPA-free and it ensures the cooler box’s strength and durability. Furthermore, our cooler box has been fitted with military-grade latches, seals, and insulation (which is newly invented!). In fact, the seals can withstand pressures down to 2kPa!

Now, on to the all-important sustainability part. Both our 20L and 50L QueenBee cooler boxes require no electricity at all to function, yet it performs better than any other cooler on the market. Instead of electricity, it simply requires you to use our manual vacuum hand pump, aptly The Stinger. But don’t fret, I’m sure you’re picturing the days in your childhood when you spent ages pumping up a bicycle tyre only to figure out that it had a puncture. This cooler box is the opposite – you’re pumping air out instead of in and that only takes a few seconds. We’re proud that it’s the first cooler on the market to use vacuum technology to preserve food. Plus, it keeps food fresher for longer by creating a pressure of at least 80kPa below normal atmospheric pressure which reduces aerobic bacterial growth by 3x and increases temperature rising time by 20%.

We’re so confident in our product that we’re offering you a 3-year limited warranty with the purchase of our QueenBee cooler boxes. More information can be found under the About Us section. Furthermore, as we are striving to preserve not only food but the environment too, we are proud to sponsor $10 from every cooler sold to honeybee preservation organisations! So rest assured, making a beeline for our QueenBee coolers will make a big difference in the lives of many precious honeybees.
